DOH Announces Second Cycle of Nurses Across New York Loan Repayment Program
On July 10th, the New York State (NYS) Department of Health (DOH) issued a Solicitation of interest (SOI) for the second cycle of the Nurses Across New York Loan Repayment Program. This program makes funds available to help recruit registered professional nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and seeks to help address the nursing shortage in underserved communities. Up to $3 million in total funding is available through this SOI.

Awards will provide up to $25,000 for an RN or $10,000 for an LPN who agrees to practice in an underserved area for a three-year service obligation period. It is expected that 80 percent of funding will be awarded to RNs and 20 percent will be awarded to LPNs. Funding may be awarded directly to the RN or LPN or to a health care facility to recruit or retain a nurse by providing the nurse funds to repay qualifying outstanding debt. Eligible health care facilities include:

  • Article 28 general hospitals, diagnostic and treatment centers (D&TCs), or nursing homes;
  • Article 40 hospices;
  • Article 36 Certified Home Health Agencies (CHHAs), Licensed Home Care Services Agencies (LHCSAs), or other long term home health care programs;
  • Medical practices registered as a Professional Corporation (PC) or Professional Limited Liability Corporation (PLLC); and
  • Federally funded not-for-profit health centers or clinics that service the medically underserved (i.e., FQHCs).

The health care facility must serve an underserved population or be located in an underserved area (details here), including rural area of NYS as defined in Attachment 1 of the SOI.

The SOI is available here. Applications are due on August 22nd. Questions may be submitted to NANY@health.ny.gov through July 24th with the subject line “Nurses Across New York Cycle 2 Question.”

DOH Issues RFA for the Latino Health Outreach Initiative
On July 17th, DOH issued a Request for Applications (RFA) for the Latino Health Outreach Initiative. This initiative aims to reduce barriers to health care and improve health care system access for Latinos (defined as all individuals who identify as of Spanish or Hispanic origin). Through this RFA, DOH will provide up to $52,750 in annual funding to one awardee during the five-year program period. Funding is intended to supplement and expand, but not supplant, existing resources and services. Funding may be used for outreach and engagement, health education and prevention efforts, and peer support services.

Applicants will be required to choose to address one or more of the following social determinants of health priorities:

  • Health insurance
  • Language access and cultural competence
  • Food security
  • Transportation
  • Immigration status

Eligible applicants are not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organizations, including health organizations and community-based organizations, with at least three years of experience working with Latino populations. Contracts are expected to begin on May 1, 2025.

The RFA is available here. Applications are due on September 4th. Questions may be submitted to Joyce Meadows at omhhdp.funding@health.ny.gov through July 31st with the subject line “RFA#20491, Latino Health Outreach Initiative” and should include a reference to the RFA section and paragraph to which the question refers.
